“Apothecaries, Slaves, and Drug Merchants in the Atlantic World”
Ben Breen’s dissertation research and his work at the New York Academy of Medicine hinges on the interplay between non-European pharmaceutical knowledge and European imperialism. His talk will discuss medical writers from Brazil, Portugal, and the West Indies who wrote about tropical drugs. Many of these writings are largely forgotten today, but they offer a fascinating glimpse into the origins of global drug trade.
